tea & beeswax

Chai & crafts; a good start to the day!
Tea is always the best way to start pretty much anything; your morning, studying, sleep. Anything and everything goes, and that is especially true when you're hanging out with friends and gearing up to make some awesome beeswax wraps!

I think a lot of people are trying to live more environmentally friendly, myself included. It's not always making big changes, but smaller ones like using less plastic and preprocessed foods. I don't always do it, but I am trying and that makes all the difference than not trying at all.

We went to a local fabric shop to grab some pinking shears and some really nice 100% cotton fabric. We went pretty much straight towards the quilting section. They always have really nice patterns and a large variety, selling them either by the metre or in quarter fats (which are smaller, pre-cut pieces of fabric).

So many different pieces of fabric to choose from!
We took a break after cutting out the sizes and shapes that we wanted, going for lunch at a local cafe.

In the middle of making the beeswax wraps, Esther was also trying to make her own rose water which turned out really well.
After the fabric had been cut, we melted the solid beeswax on a low heat and slowly it turned to liquid. Using a baking tray with folded baking paper (to catch excess wax), we placed one of the fabric squares on it and poured a small amount of wax onto it in the shape of a smiley face. Partially by accident, but also because it gave the fabric enough coverage before sticking it into the oven (set at low heat) for half a minute or so to melt the wax further.

The wax spreads out quite a bit in the oven, so we used a spreader to push the wax towards the edges and to also get rid of the excess; lifting one of the corners up to detach it from the paper.

Straight out of the oven!

And here is my small collection of beeswax wraps.

A huge thank you to Esther, for showing me how to make these and for the fantastic tea and company. I had a great time and will definitely be trying these out soon!
