op shop book haul

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love op shops! They're full of so much potential and have pretty much all you will ever need or want. And what I wanted from this particular trip were vintage books for a project that I'm working on.

I bought a bunch of books about the garden, especially herbs and how they can be used in the everyday. One of the books is particularly wonderful, with illustrations by Peter Morter who has illustrated a great number of books including the Australian Flower Garden Planner.

I even found a half annotated copy of the Theban Plays by Sophocles. I absolutely love it when you find books from op shops that have annotations in them by their previous owners, it gives them more character than just being an older book. It shows that they were once loved, and well-thumbed through.

The project that I've been working on is going to be using the pages from some of these books, and even the books themselves; the covers and spines, to create new books for journaling and artistic creations.

(Or at least that's the plan!)

I haven't worked with books for an art project since the very beginning of last year when I was playing around with florist wire inside a book about trees to make a tree; so it will be nice to get back into creating with old books.

But some of these are definitely going onto my already overflowing bookshelves, namely the King Arthur novel and the aforementioned Sophocles and Peter Morter book.

I did buy a few things that weren't books, a few hankies and some illustrated bird cards, envelopes and a small teacup and tea tin. I'm thinking of planting mint in the tea tin and keeping it in my room with my other plants; it'd definitely make my room feel cosier.
